Year Three -- Week Three: An Extra Treat!

This week, the CSA said we were to be receiving a special treat, which was something to look forward to! Being a fruit share member and deciding to stick it out with them earned all of us some cherries! Which smell so ripe - I'm just waiting for inspiration to strike.

Week Three

1 PT blueberries
1 QT cherries *Fruit Share Item*
1 basil plant
2 heads lettuce
3 bunches chard
1 bunch broccoli rabe
1 small bunch beets
3 small onions
1 clove garlic
1 cucumber

Blueberries: Yeah, pretty much gone already. I just eat them by the handful.

Cherries: Cherry Almond Crisp. I really don't need to say anything more.

Basil Plant: Planted. It is a little shocked, but I'm hoping it will rebound just fine.

Lettuce: Salads. Had a party this weekend and have only 1/2 head left. Thank Goddess that Tuesday is pick-up day.

Chard: I used one bunch in the aforementioned salad.

Broccoli Rabe: Also went in aforementioned salad. The salad was so large it fit in the popcorn bowl, which is massive. :)

Onions: Made potato salad for the party. I'm not a huge onion fan in that I don't like larger slices of onion, so I chopped up these little ones and they did the trick.

Cucumber: Also went right in the salad.

I think this is one of the best weeks so far for CSA usage. I'm saving up the beets and turnips for something....I just don't know what yet. I'm thinking that I'll roast them, but I'm not sure with what.....any ideas?

  1. Beets are delicious roasted with just a bit of olive oil and salt. Vegetable candy. : )

  2. The cherries would certainly be a treat here, as the local place doesn't have any because of the hot/freezing spring weather. As for beets, I am making this tomorrow: http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/beet-fennel-soup-10000001120314/, a beet and fennel soup. Yummy! Freezes great, too. Except I have a lot more beets than that, hm...

  3. @MrsDragon - I know - I've just been waiting to have enough to roast! I think that's on the plan for this week!

@Mary - I know, most of our cherry crop was killed off too -- most of the farmers aren't even bothering to pick because it's not worth it - but this partner farm did and we are so appreciative! Hmmm....I'm not huge into fennel, but I'll definitely start looking for some beet soup recipes.....
